民主主義の父と呼ばれたリンカーン大統領
彼の人生は、苦労の連蔵だった。少年時代は農作業を手伝い、学校教育を受けたのは１年にも満たず、母とは９歳の時に死別。青年時代には婚約者を病気で失い、事業の失敗で多額の借金を抱えた。
壮年期には上院議員選挙で２度落選し、最愛の息子を病気で亡くしている。だが、リンカーンは決して歩みを止めることはなかった。不遇の中でも必死に勉強し、英文法、数学、法律などを独学で習得していった。苦闘の連続が、彼の不屈の精神を育てた。まさに苦労に勝る教育なし。を体現した人生であった。
「人民の、人民による人、民のための政治」との演説で知られるアメリカの第１６代大統領エイブラハム・リンカーン。きょう４日は、彼の大統領就任満１６０年に当たる。

His life was a series of hardships. He helped with farming as a boy, had less than a year of school education, and died of his mother at the age of nine. In his youth he lost his fiancée to illness and was in heavy debt due to the failure of his business.
In his middle age, he lost twice in the Senate elections and lost his beloved son to illness. But Lincoln never stopped his path. He studied desperately even though he was in a bad situation, and learned English grammar, mathematics, law, etc. by himself. A series of struggles fostered his indomitable spirit. He has no education that is more than hard work. It was a life that embodied.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, known for his speech "Politics of the People, People by the People, Politics for the People". Today is the 160th anniversary of his inauguration as president.
